Five of China's grandmasters met to discuss the merits of each of the various forms of kung Fu, in order to develop a form with a shorter learning period.
However before this new form could be put into practice, the Shaolin Temple was raided and burned by the Manchurians.
Ng Mui, a nun, was the only survivor of the original five grandmasters. She passed her knowledge onto a young orphan girl whom she named Wing Chun. The name means, "Praise Spring", representing "hope for the future". An emperor asked for the young girl's hand in marriage. But the young girl challenged him to a duel and if she won, she would not have to marry him. The Nun taught her Wing Chun and she defeated the emperor.
Over the years, Wing Chun was handed down to only a small number of dedicated students. Yim Wing Chun taught it to her husband, Leung Bok Chau, who in turn passed on the knowledge to Leung Yee Tai and Wong Wah Bo. Leung Yee Tai then taught Leung Jan, who went on to teach his son, Leung Bik, and Chan Wah Shun. Both of these practitioners taught Yip Man, who went on to become a legend in martial arts circles and is still spoken of today. Grandmaster WIlliam Chueng introduced Bruce Lee to Ip man and was his Senior Instructor.
Master Phillip Redmond's martial arts career started after his first of two tours in Vietnam. After his first tour he was stationed in Okinawa. While he was stationed there he had the opportunity to study with Eizo Shimabuku in Shorin-Ryu (Okinawan karate). After 4 years of duty in the Marine Corps (USMC), Master Redmond was honorably discharged in 1970 and then he moved to New York City.
After moving to NYC 1970 Master Redmond started training in Fu Jow Pai (Tiger Claw) under Grandmaster Wai Hong. During the same year Master Redmond was introduced to Wing Chun by a friend.
After a period of time Master Redmond, started training under Sifu Duncan Leung. When Duncan Leung left NYC to move to Virginia, Sifu Redmond, studied under a succession of Wing Chun instructors in NYC's Chinatown. Master Redmond studied under prominent instructors such as Sifu Lee Moy Shan, Sifu Alan Lamb, Sifu Henry Leung, and Sifu Moy Yat. In 1983, Master Redmond saw an ad for a seminar being in held in Los Angeles, CA. Master Redmond immediately bought plane tickets and flew to California for two weeks. During those two weeks, Master Redmond realized that the Wing Chun he learned prior to the seminar was a shadow of what Grandmaster Cheung was teaching. From that point on, Master Redmond gave up his instructor standing in a previous Wing Chun style and started as a beginner in Grandmaster Cheung's Wing Chun. Master Redmond became a sifu in GM Cheung's system in 1991 and earned his provisional Master rank in 1994.
Sifu Stewart's Journey started in 2000. He was in college playing football and his cousin introduced him to Tai Chi. Sifu Stewart started doing a 20 minute Tai Chi tape everyday and it changed everything. Sifu Stewart attended Tai Yim Kung Fu in Columbia, MD in 2001. After College, Sifu Stewart moved to Georgia to play Semi-Pro football. After a full season, he moved back to MD (2003) and continued his training. He was leveling up when he stumbled upon the Movie, Ip Man. Sifu Stewart looked for a Wing Chun Teacher and switched schools and attended SIfu Shannon Moore's School in Columbia, MD (2009). Sifu Stewart Studied in MD until 2012. Sifu Stewart moved to Montana and went to a Knife Defense/Dim Mak Seminar in LA (2013) hosted by Grandmaster William Chueng. This is when Master Phillip Redmond became my teacher. After years of training and practice, Sifu Stewart reached the level of Instructor in 2021. Sifu Stewart worked with students in Montana and Alaska helping them learn Wing Chun. In April of 2024, Sifu Stewart attended Master Redmond's Wing Chun Seminar and obtained level 10 Sifu. Sifu Stewart continues to train his Montana Students and is growing his Alaska student base.
